Once again, CGC has had the good fortune of hosting two amazing Canada World Participants as volunteers: Charlotte from Quebec and Richard from Mozambique. Not only do they
bring with them great enthusiasm, but also warm smiles and wonderful stories about their travels. Read about their experiences working with CGC so far:
"We have been here for a month and a half. We have done many things, including learning about GMO’s (genetically modifed organism) and the importance of labeling foods with GM ingredients. In Duncan a petition has been circulating in support of Bill C-257, which would help people to know if their food contains GMO’s, by requiring GM foods to be labeled. For example, in jam, if there is a fruit that is genetically modified, it has to be written on the label.
Cowichan Green Community works hard to improve food security. They encourage people to grow their own food and advocate for a local food system, instead of an industrial food system. We learned that an industrial food system consists of many steps, including growing, harvesting, storage, transportation, processing, packaging, marketing, retailing and consumption. When you have your own garden, there are fewer steps. We also learned that the industrial food system is very fragile because of its dependence on oil.
Emily helps us in everything we do, thank you very much! We have also helped with the “Fruit Save” program and now we have plenty of delicious apple juice. We also planted trees with “Ceres”, CGC’s social enterprise. That was a really fun day. Kristi, who runs Ceres, is very friendly and easy to get along with.
Friday meetings are a challenge for Richard beacause they are all in english, but Charlotte is always ready to help him translate and the CGC team is very understanding. We really like Judy (CGC’s director) and think she is funny!
The Warmland House garden is beautiful, thanks to the entire day that we spent there pulling weeds and organizing the greenhouse with Emily. We worked with the Canada World Youth group at the Alexander School garden and now, this garden is looking great! Many ofCGC’s staff were there to guide us with our work.
There is only a month and a half left in our program and we are really happy to have more time with CGC’s team. CGC has been the perfect work placement for us!"

"Estamos aqui desde um mes e meio. Fizemos muitas coisas. Apredimos muitas coisas acerca dos alimentos transgenicos(organismos geneticamente modificados) e acerca da importancia de etiquetta. Aqui, em Duncan, ha uma petição para apoiar un projeito de lei C-257, de indicar na etiquettas si o alimento e geneticamente modificado o uma parte deste alimento. Por exemplo, se uma mistura de frutas(jam) tem um fruta que e genticamente modificado, tem que ser escrito sobre a etiquetta.
Cowichan Green Community trabalha muito acerca da segurança alimentar. Fazem a promoção de fazer un jardim em casa e de comprar comida da ilha de Vancouver. De modo a não pasar un grande transtorno no sistema alimentar. Sabendo que o sistema alimentar industrial passa dez etapas antes de vir a nossos pratos. Començando com o crescimento, depois, tem o colheita, o armazenamento, transporte, transformação(o processamento), acondicionamento, marketing, Inspenção, a preparação e o fim, consumo. Enquanto que ter seu proprio jardim e unicamente quatro etapas: crescimento, colheita, preparação e comsumo. Tambem, o sistema alimentar industrial e muito fragil. De ter seu proprio jardim e tambem uma independencia alimentar e uma economia.
Emily nos da muito apoio acerca de todos que fizemos, muito obrigado! Participamos muito no programa “fruit save” e agora, tem muito delicioso sumo de maçã. Tambem plantamos arvores com o programa Ceres. Isto foi muito bom, gostamos muito deste dia.
As reuniões da seixta feira são um desafio para Richard a causa é Ingles e Charlotte sempre esta pronta para ajudar a tradução e a equipa de Cowichan Green Community é muito compreensível e Judy (a directora de CGC) é muita divertida!
O jardim de Warm land fica bonito agora, a causa do dia enteiro que passamos ali a tirar plantas secas e a organisar o viveiro com Emily ! Trabalhamos no jardim Alexander com o grupo de Canada World Youth e agora, este jardim esta muito bonito. Muitas pessoas de CGC estavão connosco.
Fica um mes e meio aqui e estamos muito felizes de ter mais tempo com a equipa porque CGC é o local de trabalho perfeito para nos! "
