FruitSave You can help!
The Cowichan Valley is a fantastic place to grow food and fruit trees can be found virtually everywhere. Unfortunately, every year a significant portion of the fruit from these trees is left to waste, often creating a problem by attracting wasps and bears to our neighbourhoods. ![]() The goal of FruitSave is to
identify and organize the harvest of unwanted, non-commercially grown
fruit in the Cowichan Valley, putting it to good use in food banks and
community kitchens.
If you have fruit for the picking, you can help by telling us how many fruit trees you have, what types, when you think they might be ripe for picking and if you would like to keep a portion of the pickings. We will contact you during the picking season to arrange a time and date for harvesters to arrive. ![]() If you would like to help with harvesting the fruit give us a call at 748-8506 or email (contact page) and we will register your particulars in our FruitSave database. Once registered, you will be called for scheduling and transportation arrangements as the picking season begins. Harvesters should be ready for a couple of hours of fun outdoor activity. If you have 'critter-proof' storage space (basement,
garage, storage shed) that you would like to offer as temporary storage
for fruit, please contact us for details. |
