Growing Opportunities Farm Project

Learn how to grow food on a larger then a backyard scale

Are you interested in having more local food on your plate and in your community? Want to learn how to grow on a scale larger than a backyard?

Growing Opportunities can help you work towards that goal.

Food security is more than just making sure you have enough to eat for today. It’s also important to learn skills such as growing, canning, dehydrating, and supporting others to be food secure.

Using bees to make honey

Background

In 2008, The Land Conservancy (TLC) and Farm Folk /City Folk held a meeting in the Cowichan Valley to discuss their support for Community Farm initiatives. From this and other meetings a group emerged willing to farm co-operatively.

Just as Community Gardens provides garden plots for gardeners, Growing Opportunities organizes resources and people so larger parcels of land can be farmed.

With the help of tractors, drip line irrigation, and shared tools, experience, education, and opportunity are combined to grow organic food for a shared harvest.

In 2009, Growing Opportunities grew market garden vegetables and honey bees in a one acre pilot project.  Produce was distributed to members and surplus sold to pay expenses.

We need your help

In 2010, we’d like to expand memberships and partnerships, grow heritage seeds, and field test new crops.
