Wild Food Walks: Walk 5
Tim's wild food education started at a young age with his mother's teachings of eating foods available while on hikes. This was a necessary part of their diet which relied on the nutritional supplementation of traditional First Nations foods. Later, Tim was taught to fish for wild Salmon by gaff, spear, and dip net, as well as being taught how to hunt by his uncles. As Junior biologist at Cowichan Tribes, Tim's focus is on the disappearance of Chinook Salmon from our river systems, and how they can be brought back for long term food security. The loss of our Salmon is of huge concern to Tim, as is the loss of Elk habitat to development, and indigenous food plants to invasive species. While out on a walk with Tim, one may learn not only what to eat according to the season, but what to eat in a survival situation, as well as the Hul'q'umi'num names of the plants and animals.
Depart 9:30 from the parking lot at St. Ann’s Church, off of Tzouhalem Rd.
